Season Cells

By Katrina Barnett

The illusion of movement on a surface catches my eye. I want to take risks and push myself to create a sense of motion on gallery walls. Out of this experimentation process, the idea for the installation came to light. Season Cells is inspired by conquering giants in our lives, specifically dealing with the challenges of chronic illness. Celebrating the achievement of endurance, season after season, against the obstacles reflects astonishing strength. This fall, I was reflecting on the twelve years my son has lived as a Type 1 Diabetic. Through the use of layering, the cell prints are both strong and fragile at the same time. For those navigating life with chronic illness this balance is a lived reality. The cell sculptures are designed to show an intersection of flight, life, and the unknown, personifying both human and cellular behaviors. As the installation grew, the cells evolved in various shapes, sizes, and colors. The image printed on each cell is foliage, showing the beauty and resilience of life and decay in our world. Fine gauge stainless steel wirework holds the structure together. Similar to our human bodies, the cells reflect a strength in collective vulnerability.

Season Cells, reduction woodcut, screen printing, mixed media, 60” X 120” X 10”, 2024.
